NEW! “Banking on Climate Change” Fossil Fuel Report Card 2020
Is your bank on the list of top fossil fuel financiers? If you have an account with one of the big banks, chances are you will find it on the list. Since the Paris Agreement to limit climate change was adopted, 35 global banks have financed fossil fuels with $2.7 trillion U.S. dollars. The authors of this report find “that overall bank financing continues to be aligned with climate disaster.” If you find your bank on the list, consider fighting climate breakdown by changing your bank to one that is not on the list financing the expansion of fossil fuels. If you do change banks, let your old bank know why you broke up with them.
To make a large contribution to reducing your carbon footprint and improving biodiversity, reduce your meat and dairy consumption. Eliminating red meat is also a win for your health. We are all different. Find where you burn the most fossil fuel and reduce your carbon footprint by focusing on those areas. Perhaps you don’t fly but drive a lot or keep your home heated to 75 degrees in the winter or cooled to 65 degrees in the summer and don’t use energy efficient light bulbs. This short Canadian video made by the Province of British Columbia will give you some suggestions for reducing your carbon footprint starting today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTfgNFz1DBM You can calculate your carbon foot print with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s tool at at https://www3.epa.gov/carbon-footprint-calculator/ For more a more in depth understanding of climate change science and many ideas on how you can cut your carbon footprint and move towards a net neutral lifestyle, read Peter Kalmus’ book Being the Change: Live Well and Spark a Climate Revolution
