According to the New York Times, the fires in Australia have, as of January 4th, burned an area two times the size of the U.S. State of Maryland. The severity of the Australian fire season has been unprecedented this year due to a three-year drought and the hottest, driest year on record. An ecologist from Sydney University said that nearluy 500 million birds, reptiles and mammals have been killed in the fires in the State of New South Wales alone.
